Dirty beats, Warren G and the long walk home – Getintothis’ Stephanie Heneghan reflects on an emotional Liverpool Sound City 2011.

The Young Turks showcase at the Shipping Forecast saw the mask-wearing producer with difficult to pronounce moniker, SBTRKT, prove so popular that there was a strict one in, one out door policy.
Meaning I had to QUEUE. Only for a couple of minutes but still…
Luckily my disconcertion at standing in line vanished when I finally got that long overdue vodka and diet coke at the bar.
First drink of the festival! And SBTRKT? He was brilliant, dirty electronic beats in a crowded basement is exactly how I love to spend my Saturday nights.
Dropping the original version of Wildfire, the track recently guested on by Drake, was the highlight for me.
When his Young Turk stable mate Jamie Xx took over from midnight on DJing duties, the vibe took a darker moodier turn.
The Hold is perfect for intimate gigs with the low ceilings and brickwork lending a raw setting to events.
After he’d finished we caught Happy Endings upstairs in the bar with a party set that included NERD and Warren G. And yes, I was dancing on a table – I aint ashamed!
And that was the end of Liverpool Sound City 2011 for me. Well the printable ending anyway, the actual one occurred at 8am in the morning and involved tequila shots, bathroom confessions and my weekly walk of shame home through town. Sound City, it’s been a blast. See you next year. x
