Houses, Carousel, Sensorites: Mello Mello, Liverpool

Houses live at Mello Mello Liverpool review.jpg
Liverpool’s Carousel and Sensorites are in fine fettle but as Getintothis’ Charles J Roberts reports, it’s Chicago duo Houses that really raise the roof.

There are times when being involved in music as a player or listener can be really depressing.
Streams of meaningless prose put to tunes that you don’t connect to. But occasionally you have a great night where the acts are superb and your faith gets reaffirmed. So it came to pass that Getintothis was at Mello Mello on an unassuming Friday night with little expectation.
First up were Sensorites. This Liverpool-based four piece really have done their homework, with soaring vocal harmonies that would make the Stone Roses jealous.
Not betraying their roots they performed a tight set of melodic fun which had everyone there enjoying themselves. A perfect set opener.

Next to grace the stage was Carousel with an impressive amount of equipment and talent they kept the stage illuminated and made us think that they needed a bigger one.
The animation of the lead singer and the clear amount of thought that was put into the set shone through and we felt at peace and yet energised.

Peace was short lived however as Houses came on after a short break.
The Chicago-based duo were embarking on the last leg of their brief tour around Europe and feedback had been great, so expectations were raised. We were not disappointed.
Live sampling alongside female vocal translated into a sound close to sheer perfection, recalling the early days of Curve or the Cocteau Twins.
The last tune – a Chemical Brothers cover was performed flawlessly – our only regret, the night hadn’t lasted longer.
