Ásgeir

Icelandic songwriter Ásgeir readies debut Liverpool outing, Getintothis’ Emma Walsh warms us up.

If someone were to say the name Ásgeir to you, you’d be forgiven for offering a tissue. Fret not though, this is another type of infectious contagion you’re likely to be familiar with very soon.
From the wilds of Iceland comes 21-year-old songwriter Ásgeir, who, since the release of his debut album back in 2012 has taken his home country by storm – no small feat – beating Björk and Sigur Rós to have the fastest and biggest selling debut by a homegrown artist.
The English language version of that album, In the Silence has been making slow but steady waves since its release here last year.

Perhaps the best thing to come out of Iceland since those tasty little quick defrost Belgian Chocolate Eclairs, Ásgeir will be bringing his melodic electronica to East Village Arts Club on April 9 as part of an international tour that already boasts a sellout date in London’s Union Chapel.
As well as bringing his sounds to your doorstep, Ásgeir releases 7″ picture disc reimagining of Nirvana‘s Heart Shaped Box on April 19 for Record Store Day – what more could you ask for?
…How about a cover of Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball? Yep, that’ll do.
