A Christmas EVOL: feat. Queen Maud, D R O H N E, Filter Distortion, Jennifer Davies: The Magnet, Liverpool

The final FestEVOL of 2014 saw an electric line up at The Magnet, as Getintothis’ Chris Burgess reports on a night spanning the spectrum electronica.

Spirits ran high at The Magnet’s festive A Christmas EVOL, with a truly electric line up of local talent.

The duo of Queen Maud, who are starting to make something of a name for themselves on the Liverpool circuit, performed their brand of unsettling, textured electro, complete with howling vocals and dark samples.

They were joined by fellow Liverpool duo D R O H N E, purveyors of ambient, sinister soundscapes. Luke McCulloch and Richie Craddock are proving themselves to be one of the most innovative production teams in the city at the moment.

The Wirral’s Filter Distortion supplied their own mix of thudding electronica. Marrying guitars to synths to create beat-driven tunes, their rhythmic electro is perhaps at the harsher end of synthpop.

Finally, singer-songwriter Jennifer Davies, making her debut solo live outing, delivered her unique brand of lush art-pop electronica. Seemingly destined for bigger things, Davies has already worked alongside the likes of US songwriter Chris Braide and Tord Knudsen of The Wombats, a long-time collaborator.

It appears that Liverpool’s electronic music scene is in good hands, showing a lot of promise for the year ahead.
