Marvin Powell has began to capture a wider audience with his heart-warming folk-pop. Now releasing his ditties through James Skelly’s Skeleton Key Records – Powell’s profile has risen notably in recent months.
Fresh from announcing his William Basinkski tour support, Liverpool’s own compositional savant Jon Davies (aka KEPLA) releases Ordinant 6 on the No Pain In Pop imprint. This release is a characteristically amorphous structure, informed by fading rave memories and ambient sensibility.
Our final slice of home-baked brilliance is plucked from the techno arena; AKASA is the producer alias of Royal Standard multi-artist Madeline Thomasina Hall. 77 Hours of Confusion is an accomplished debut of creeping arpeggio co-produced by Ryan Blakely. AKASA supports Luke Vibert at The Kazimier on October 10th.
Visiting the city in the month ahead are Talib Kweli, iZem Sounds, My Panda Shall Fly and Get The Blessing. Talib Kweli is an OG of the rap scene and a fitting replacement for Yasiin Bey at the LIMF commissioned ‘The Revolution Will Be Live’ – a tribute to Gil Scott-Heron unfolding at St. Georges Hall on August 27.
iZem Sounds is a Portuguese beat maker who takes his influence from Latin and African groove. Bringing the sound of Lisbon to the Kazimier Garden on August 20 – this unique mix of tropical hip hop is recommended for the Giles Peterson regulars.
Sri Lankan born My Panda Shall Fly is part of the same series of dates at the Kazimier Garden. His globally informed ambience and spiritually charged beats will be impacting on the 27th of August.
Get The Blessing are a Portishead-spawned punk jazz quartet from Bristol. Prepare to be teased by tantalising trumpet slurs and soothed by the rhythm of Clive Dreamer’s jazzy brushwork. We’ll be genuflecting to this at The Kazimier on September 4.
Giving you a bigger bang for your buck, we’ve included four tracks from around the wider music community. This months instalment includes Ninja Tunes’ funk house wizard Seven Davis Jnr and LA based producer Active Child. Also in the mix in this edition is Prince-cum-Miguel producer Dornik and Congolese rumba pioneers Mbongwana Star.
