With author Kevin Sampson talking about his new book, Hillsborough Voices: The Real Story Told by the People Themselves at Leaf this week, Getintothis’ Cath Bore previews the evening.
On April 15, 1989 the world witnessed one of the worst football disasters occur at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield; 96 people were crushed to death and another 766 injured in what later was admitted to be caused by a series of shocking failures by police.
Hillsborough Voices carries personal stories from survivors and those who fought so long and passionately for justice on behalf of those who died. Some interviewees in the book have grown to become familiar and public figures, but many who share experiences are speaking publicly for the first time.
On Thursday evening, Kevin Sampson and Neil Atkinson (of the Anfield Wrap) will invite onstage at Leaf some of the Hillsborough survivors, justice campaigners and the everyday fans who led rescue attempts on the day.
Sampson witnessed the horror of Hillsborough first hand, and assisted in organising the Rock The Kop benefit concert at Anfield Stadium in 1997, which featured Manic Street Preachers, Dodgy, The Beautiful South, The Lightning Seeds and Stereophonics.
From the tragic events of April 15, 1989 to what unfolded in the hours, days and eventually decades that followed, the book will interweave the voices of those who were there with the families and friends of those who died, and key figures who have played prominent roles in the long search for the truth.
The book is fully endorsed and promoted by the Hillsborough Justice Campaign and carries their official logo.
Hillsborough Voice: Kevin Sampson in conversation with Neil Atkinson is at Leaf, on Thursday, May 26, doors 7pm. Tickets are available here, or instore at Waterstones Liverpool ONE.
Kevin will also be signing copies at News From Nowhere on Bold Street at 5:30pm on Friday, June 3.
