The Aleph – aka Ben Fair and Jon Hering

As December shapes out as a good month for the experimental duo called The Aleph, Getintothis’ Amaan Khan looks forward to it intently.

Come December, part of Liverpool’s Unity Theatre will be transformed to accommodate a set of immersive events titled The Dark Dark Woods. Along with visual installations inspired from the Christmas show Little Red and The Big Bad Wolf, the space will feature live music, plays, workshops and site-specific sound installations.

Also on the bill for live music is the experimental electronic duo The Alephwho impressed us at The Liverpool Music Week Closing Party just a few weeks back and further on with the release of their new track Pantomime. The big band-tinged electro-ish track packs enough hooks to hold us over and just enough weirdness to keep things interesting.

The Aleph constitutes of Benjamin Fair and Jonathan Hering, both of whom have been former members of local chaotic pop group a.P.A.t.T. and almost constant members of minimalists Ex-Easter Island Head alongside scoring films.

The power of music: the genius of electro-classical pioneer Xenakis

The Dark Dark Woods will feature music that the duo tailored specifically for the site’s sound installation and resonating with a project they undertook in 2013, wherein they layered recorded and live vocals to create work inspired from Cumbria’s Wray Castle and the surrounding woodlands and used the acoustics of the same.

Aleph will also perform the music live on December 9 along with an updated performance of their original music and film piece, The Good Eater.

A few weeks later on December 31, the group will play a set of a rather different style, that is synth-pop, at The Invisible Wind Factory as a part of Kazimier New Years Eve Party.

With two very different shows and the single release, December looks promising for The Aleph fans.
