As we host the first of our new monthly gig nights, Getintothis’ Paul Higham rounds up the sights and sounds from Deep Cuts Live.

Thursday night saw the first of Getintothis’ monthly gig nights aimed to showcase the best emerging talent from the Merseyside scene and beyond. An opportunity to witness at first hand the music that we regularly champion in these pages and, in particular, in our Deep Cuts new music column.

A sense of nervous anticipation always precedes any new night such as this; yet any initial fears were quickly assuaged as the room began to fill nicely, the crowd eager to soak up the sounds.

Lo Five kicked things off with a typically assured and understated batch of melodic electronica before Hicari‘s buoyantly vibrant, ’80s-influenced pop injected energy to proceedings – helped no doubt by their flashlight footwear.

Laurie Shaw delivered a rambunctious set of snarling garage-rock before Spirit Level kept the atmosphere bubbling with an ever-interesting electronic set. Bringing the night to a close were Little Triggers with a worthy headline set of pure rock ‘n’ roll extravagance – although the sight of the singer rushing offstage to be sick was on account of genuine illness rather than bacchanalian excess. Indeed special credit must be given to the band for ploughing on regardless and ensuring a memorable end to an enjoyable first instalment of Deep Cuts.

The next Deep Cuts night will take place at Buyers Club on March 2 – watch these pages for imminent line-up announcement. We hope to see you all there.
