Mightily impressed by Kelela’s FACT-screened film, Getintothis’ Sinéad Nunes looks forward to the princess of R&B’s UK tour this February.

The pop innovator and reigning princess of R&B Kelela plays Manchester Academy on February 18, the final day of the Under Cinema exhibition at FACT, in which she features.

Under Cinema is a new commission by Wu Tsang, acclaimed LA filmmaker and friend of the honey-voiced singer and songwriter.

The exhibition is on FACT‘s first floor, literally beneath the cinema screens.

The two-screen film installation documents Kelela recording her latest album Take Me Apart, released last year on Warp Records, and whilst one screen plays out the documentary, the other depicts Kelela patiently watching the camera, as if assessing the gallery visitor’s reception of her music.

Kelela‘s musical output exists on the fringes of club music, combining synths, rhythmic pop, alluring vocals and transportive cinematic sound, featured in hits such as LMK and Frontline.

Films about film making – the dark heart of Hollywood

A telling sign of her snowballing success and position in the international music scene, Kelela‘s sell-out Manchester gig has been upgraded from Northern Quarter’s Gorilla to the much larger Manchester Academy.

Wu Tsang’s Under Cinema is on display at FACT until Sunday 18 February.

Kelela UK tour dates are:

18 Feb: Manchester, O2 Academy
22 Feb: London, Roundhouse
23 Feb: Bristol, SWX
