LIMF 2018 reveals headliners Example, Hacienda Classical and raft of artists set for Liverpool summer festival, Getintothis Kevin Cliffhanger reports on the newly ticketed event set for Sefton Park.

Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) returns to Sefton Park on Saturday and Sunday July 21-22 with Example and DJ Wire and Hacienda Classical headlining the event.

LIMF, which will now be a ticketed event for the first time in it’s six year history, promises more than 70 live artists over two days with further additions including WileyStefflon DonJax Jones and Young Fathers.

Tickets start at £5 for an advance day ticket across the Central Stage, True School Club House Stage and the itsliverpool Next Gen Stage plus DJ tent, The Shubz DJ Tent, which proved to be a huge hit in its inaugural 2017 year.

Sunday headliners, Haçienda Classiçal team Graeme Park and Mike Pickering with the Manchester Camerata orchestra alongside guests following star turns at Glastonbury Festival‘s Pyramid Stage and sell out dates at The Royal Albert Hall and Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl.

Sunday also sees LIMF welcome back Basement Jaxx while also on the bill are Rae Morris, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Norwegian singer songwriter Aurora, Trevor Nelson, Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B, Gilles Peterson, Tim Westwood and Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers.

LIMF attracts around 120,000 people each year with the 2018 event set to feature live music until 9pm both days.

Yaw Owusu, curator of LIMF, said: “The line-up showcases Liverpool’s bold contemporary musical voice and attitude. Our theme is Co-exist and Connection so it was essential the festival represented a diverse music offer which mixes classic and new sounds plus established and emerging names – which is an honest reflection of what’s happening within music culture, not just locally, but on a global scale.

LIMF, music festivals and the future of Liverpool music up for discussion – new plans revealed

Organisers were keen to stress, to ensure the future of the festival, the Sefton Park event will be fenced off and ticketed with alcohol not being allowed on site unless purchased on site.

Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for culture, tourism and events, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “LIMF is one of the highlights of our events calendar, but due to government cuts totaling 68% of our budget, the council simply can’t continue to fund it in its entirety. Introducing tickets allows us to off-set some of the costs of staging a festival, and paying just £5 for nine hours of live music each day, performed by a top quality line-up means that without a doubt LIMF remains one of best value music festivals in the UK.

It’s also a responsible way forward – it’s now a very different climate in which to stage events, and our priority is to make LIMF a safe, enjoyable festival for everyone. Fencing the site means that we can carry out bag checks when necessary and reduce the potential for anti-social behaviour. After last year’s event we surveyed festival goers to ask if they would still attend the event if it was ticketed – more than half said yes.

We realise some people may be disappointed that it is no longer free, but we hope they understand that we have to think differently about how we stage events if people want them to continue.

Ticket details for LIMF 2018: Advanced tickets £5 per person, per day. Ages 11 and under go free but must still have a ticket. Tickets increase to £10 per person per day, and this will be the same price for walk-ups on the weekend itself. Advanced VIP tickets start from £15 per person. Anyone under the age of 14 will not be permitted to enter the VIP area.
