As Liverpool’s venues throw open their doors for the city’s annual “culture crawl” there are hundreds of events to enjoy after the sun has gone down, Getintothis’ Lewis Ridley looks forward to next months’ spectacles.
Arts and cultural festival LightNight will once again celebrate Liverpool’s world-class cultural offering and organisers Open Culture have announced late night events across the city including the official after party at Baltic venue Constellations.
An audio visual installation will blur into a dance piece; legendary LGBT/BAME archivist Sandi Hughes will set the tone with party tracks cut from 1975 to 2005; the vital global grooves of Giovanna (SisBis) will light up the LightNight dancefloor further, then the Bollywood/Punjabi pop/club/hip-hop melting moves of south London’s Manara promise to carry revellers away.
Baltic Market Food Hub (Megan Connor)
For the first time in 2018, LightNight will host two official food hubs, at Baltic Food Market and the Bombed Out Church. Showcasing food and drink from local producers, the hubs will provide entertainment as well as sustenance meaning hunger pangs won’t be an excuse to stop the party.
Away from the Baltic Triangle, the British Music Experience will host a kaleidoscopic commission especially for 2018’s festival from Jack Wates and Alex Mead.
Hinterlands to open in Baltic Triangle as Constellations team broaden their horizons
Principle sponsor Liverpool John Moores University will host the Polar Bear Waltz in their Art and Design Academy, where 6 performances will tell the story of the devastating effect humanity is having on our planet.
St George’s Hall’s East Portico Steps will be the location of one of the festivals most expressive performances. The show, World In A City is a collaborative performance of fire, traditional music, dance, stilt walkers and costume aims to transform the traditional perception of arts and cultures of Liverpool.

Brand new event space Hinterlands situated in the Cains Brewery Village will host a new live 3D light and sound installation from audio-visual artist, Carlos Bernal. While ceilidh band Gallimaufry are back at St. George’s Hall, teaching fun and crazy dance moves that have transformed over the years into the routines we use today to help raise essential funds for LightNight.
