Getintothis’ Warren Millar popped his Creamfields cherry at Daresbury and here’s how it went.
So August Bank holiday is always the annual get together of the dance festival folk at Creamfields.
This year saw the 20th anniversary of this annual iconic festival and to celebrate this milestone the line up was full of dance music heavyweights like Tiesto, Deadmau5, Faithless, Fatboy Slim, Sigma, Annie Mac and UK Grime newcomer Stormzy.
In 2006 Creamfields outgrew its old Speke Airport site and moved to Daresbury site where its been held ever since. In 2012 the adverse weather conditions meant the final day had to be cancelled for its first time in history. 2010 saw Creamfields voted “Festival Of The year” at the Music Week Awards, beating the likes of Glastonbury and V Festival.
The good news for this weekend was that the English weather was warm and, even sunny at times. Now we have to admit here and now this was our first ever Creamfields. There, we said it. We’re a Creamfields virgin, and we didn’t know or have any idea what this would be like.
Happily, we have a 19 year old son in the house to take a look through the list of artists appearing and give us a steer as to who would be worth going to watch. Children have their uses at times.
Over the years, we’ve been to our fair share of gigs and festivals but even so, we were surprised by the size of the site. And purely from a festival photographer’s point of view the PR and press facilities were great, as were the security and access to each press pit, which was very refreshing to see. No booting out after three songs (admit here that’s a bit hard to work out with DJ sets and dance music) So for a Creamfields first timer it all was very pleasant and well run.
Highlights for Getintothis were Deadmau5, Armin Van Buuren, Fatboy Slim and Martin Garrix. Ohhhh and the very friendly and fun loving punters.
So all in all a very good 20th anniversary Creamfields and if we get asked to cover it again next year we’ll jump at the chance. Like all virgins, we want to do it again.
