Talib Kweli

As Brooklyn’s Talib Kweli announces a December Liverpool gig, his first since gracing LIMF 2015, Getintothis’ Jessica Borden has the lowdown.

Talib Kweli, formerly part the rap duo Black Star with Mos Def, has been rapping since 1996 and since then he has been one of the most socially and politically active lyricists of the past 20 years.

As a constant collaborator with other artists, from Kanye West to Common and David Chappelle to Black Thought of The Roots. Kweli has managed to develop his style, sound and lyrics whilst remaining true to his past projects and beliefs.

With activism being such a strong part of Kweli‘s repertoire, it seems only right that this would intertwine with his work. Hip Hop For Respect around the turn of the century, and his latest album, a collaboration with 9th Wonder Indie 500, both display broad streaks of social conscience.

Talib Kweli has never been afraid to speak his mind and to create music which vocalizes the issues of the time, from sexism to gentrification, Kweli both speaks and collaborates knowledgeably on all subjects.

Fans now have an opportunity to experience the live show of one of hip-hop activism’s leading lights in the intimate surroundings of one of Liverpool’s most exciting young venues.

Talib Kweli plays 24 Kitchen Street on Monday, December 5. Tickets go on sale from 10am, Friday, August 26.
