Open Eye Gallery will mark its 40th birthday next year, Getintothis’ Jessica Borden looks ahead to some special exhibitions to mark this significant anniversary.

For 40 years Open Eye Gallery has been a huge force within both the Liverpool and international art scenes, showcasing incredible photography but always championing its home in Liverpool.

This marries perfectly with the new exhibition, North: Identity, Photography, Fashion which will launch on the evening of January 5 2017 and run from January 6 2017 to March 19 2017. Curated by Lou Stoppard and Adam Murray, the exhibition is a celebration of the inspirational and innovative north focusing on its impact not only to the rest of the UK but also the wider world.

The exhibition coincides with the resurgence of the north to the forefront of the UK fashion scene after decades of London being hailed as the only place for the industry in the UK. Demonstrating that there is more to our culture than just music, North: Identity, Photography, Fashion celebrates the incredible creative nature of the north.

The Exhibition will include fashion garments and photography from artists and designers from Glen Luchford and Nick Knight to Raf Simons and Paul Smith. In the true fashion of Liverpool and Open Eye Gallery these greats will sit side-by-side with new up and coming artists such as Christopher Shannon and John Skelton.

As this exhibition is supported by Adidas, iconic shoes from the archive, long a mainstay of northern style, will also be on display. Combined with the original prints from Luchford’s first shoot with The Stone Roses, this entire event becomes one that must not be missed.

This incredible exhibition isn’t the only way Open Eye Gallery will be celebrating their 40th birthday. The Culture Shifts Global project will allow 10 photographers working in different communities throughout Liverpool to co-author work in galleries while Open 3: Liverpool Agents of Change celebrates the young emerging photographers, communities, businesses and individuals in the community who are developing Liverpool’s culture further.

The essence of the celebratory year for Open Eye Gallery sums up what it has always been about: a celebration of the people and communities of Liverpool which have in turn inspired so many creative minds.

The exhibition runs from January 6 2017 to March 19 2017, so don’t miss out!
