When Boy Azooga bring their psych-percussive grooves to Liverpool this summer, Getintothis’ Cath Bore is bringing her maracas to celebrate.

The psych-indie-pop delight that are Boy Azooga play Liverpool on June 7, the day before they release album 1, 2 Kung Fu! through Heavenly Recordings.

Headed by multi-instrumentalist Davey Newington, the maracas-shaking Cardiff four piece released debut single, Face Behind Her Cigarette at the tail end of last year, with the spirit of Nigerian funk legend William Onyeabor at its percussive heart, and a cheeky wink to Black Sabbath in its chorus.

The 11-track album, co-produced by the band & Eddie El Shakarchie aka Dr Ed Boogie and recorded in part in Eddie’s front room in Cardiff.

‘The album is not all one thing for sure,’ says Davey. ‘The whole point of Boy Azooga is to be a celebration of loads of different types of music. I wanted the album to be more like a mixtape or something. We wanted to include loads of contrasting styles.’

Davey has also recorded songs with James Hoare (Ultimate Painting, Proper Ornaments, Veronica Falls) to accompany the release..

Boy Azooga comprise of Davey Newington, known for playing drums with Charlotte Church’s Pop Dungeon, and pals Daf Davies, Dylan Morgan and Sam Barnes.
