The Weekly 7

The week’s 7 best new albums, Getintothis’ Simon Kirk delves into the new releases rack.

Welcome. The first in a new feature each week to give you that perfect lift heading into the weekend.

The Friday feeling is always good, but with our aid in providing you with all the new album releases, we’d like to think your weekend just got even better.

Before we get to today here’s just a quick recap of last week’s releases which we feel deserve a mention.

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead and Algiers released barnstormers, while folk legend Bill Fay continued his Indian summer with yet another new set of songs which are simply spellbinding.

Liverpool lads Circa Waves released a digital only affair while Eminem even dropped a surprise album.

Mac Miller‘s first posthumous release was dropped entitled Circles while Kevin Barnes and his Of Montreal collective released UR FUN their first new studio album since 2018’s White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood.

Those were our early front runners for in our weekly 7 – and on to this edition it’s all about Wire‘s Mind Hive, but as you’re about to see below, we’re taking one for the team.

So, without further ado, the red ribbon has been cut and the Colgate smiles emerge for the photographers… The weekly 7 picks are.

Getintothis’ Top 100 Albums of 2019 – A Year In Review

1. Jeff Parker: Suite For Max Brown
International Anthem

Tortoise’s Jeff Parker and his ensemble The New Breed follow up from the 2016 album Need Breed with Suite for Max Brown.

The album is a dedicated to Parker‘s late mother and features a version of John Coltrane’s After the Rain and an interpretation of Joe Henderson’s Black Narcissus.

2. Sarah Mary Chadwick: Please Daddy
Sinderlyn

Australia based New Zealand songstress Sarah Mary Chadwick returns with an album inspired by the death of her father.

The title track especially is a heart-wrenching affair. This will be one of the finest albums to come out of the Southern Hemisphere this year.

3. Andy Shauf: The Neon Skyline
ANTI

Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Shauf returns with his latest album The Neon Skyline.

This album is said to be Shauf‘s “most direct and emotionally-rich work yet”. Lot of love around Liverpool for this young man – he plays Manchester in March.

Black Lips

4. Black Lips: Sing in a World That’s Falling Apart
Fire Records

Following their show at the Arts Club Loft last year, Black Lips return with a new line-up and a much anticipated new album, Sing in a World That’s Falling Apart.

We’ve always found the Black Lips to be a bit hit and miss, but we sense a hit might be on the cards here.

5. Wolf Parade: Thin Mind
Sub Pop/Royal Mountain

Following their 2017 comeback album, Cry Cry Cry, Wolf Parade return with Thin Mind.

Thin Mind sees the band once again function as a three-piece following multi-instrumentalist Dante DeCaro‘s departure from the band early last year.

6. Nicolas Godin: Concrete And Glass
Because Music

The Air man returns with Concrete and Glass working seductive wonders with poise and style to spare.

The album circles back to Godin’s formative work combining soft ambient pulses, melting minimalism and some star turns courtesy of vocalists Cola Boyy, Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, psychedelic soul singer Kadhja Bonet – and of course Godin’s distinctive vocoder.

7. Colin Stetson: Color Out of SpaceOriginal Motion Picture Soundtrack
Milan Records

Color Out of Space is the science fiction horror film based on H. P. Lovecraft‘s book of the same name.

The film is written and directed by Richard Stanley, starring Nicolas Cage and Joely Richardson with acclaimed saxophone virtuoso Colin Stetson adding the score. Gear up for what’s sure to be one hell of a sonic ride.
