Matt Corby

Would it be possible for Matt Corby’s haunting vocals to be replicated in a live setting? Getintothis’ Lowri Gronow was enthralled as the Australian singer-songwriter landed in town.

A long way from his Australian home, Matt Corby was welcomed with open arms to Merseyside and pulled in a large crowd that packed The Arts Club, proving that his music can reach and resonate with fans on the other side of the world.

The tiered room provided the smaller gig enthusiasts in the crowd with the opportunity to actually see the band perform as opposed to watching the backs of larger people, something that is often the bane of gigging experiences for those who are less than the average height.

Cheers rang out from the audience as Corby entered the stage accompanied by his band and shook his notoriously shaggy hair like a young puppy that had just got out of a bath. Corby started out playing soft, slow music but quickly picked up the pace as the crowd joined him in singing his first worldwide hit from back in 2013, Resolution.

The romantic essence of Corby’s music was at work as many of the crowd seemed to be couples, lapping up the silky songs. It’s a seemingly big step from being runner up in Australian Idol in 2007 to now being compared favourably to the likes of Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake  as well as contemparary singer songwriters such as Ben Howard yet throughout Corby’s voice was astounding. Once you throw in a flute-playing backing singer, a dancing keyboardist, impressive musicianship and lighting, the whole package is complete.

Corby spoke very little, although he did admit at one point that we probably couldn’t understand a word he was saying anyway. He appears shy and somewhat nervous, but once he began to sing, a smile broke quickly across his face. It’s clear that although he might not be a great public speaker, he certainly is a confident singer and it’s this that enthralled the crowd.

Alone under a flood of back lights to perform in solo his newest and arguably most beautiful song Monday, the crowd buzzed with excitement and seemed to collectively hold its breath when the song briefly halted, only exhaling as he proceeded on a one-man mission to melt the audience’s hearts.

Apart from an irritating buzz of chatter from a section of the audience, this was an engaging gig and Matt Corby and his band exited to a crescendo of cheers and a well-deserved standing ovation.
