The New York trio, Loma, are heading for a night in Liverpool and Getintothis’ Ryan Craig has everything you need to know.
Loma have announced a total of nine UK dates following their extensive US tour, including an appearance at Liverpool Buyers Club.
The new project is comprised of Jonathan Meiburg, best known as the singer of Shearwater, and Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski of Cross Record. Already hailed as producing one of the years standout albums with their self-titled debut, Loma are as intense as can be with their emotionally fueled lyrics and melodies.
This can be seen in tracks such as Relay Runner, which emphasizes the repetitiveness and hardships one can undergo in the the daily grind known as life. The feelings and thoughts that come with wishing for something new and different, made even more alluring and intriguing by the video that accompanies the sound.
Signed to the legendary Sub Pop label, Loma’s debut album was released just a matter of weeks ago, drawing positive reviews and comparisons to Low.
The recording of it was apparently not an altogether happy experience. Cross Record were husband and wife duo Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski. Loma‘s song I Don’t Want Children dissects a relationship’s possible futures over the song’s six minutes duration. The effect if had on Cross and Duszynski was to force them to reflect on their marriage and inspire a line of thought that led to the couple’s divorce.
So far they have decided that their creative relationship is still intact, although Duszynski has since left Cross Record. Loma will continue for now, but their future must be considered to be a fragile thing.
Loma really are a thing of beauty – slowcore to the fullest, emotional to the extreme.
