Garlands

As Garlands prepares to for its 25th birthday, Getintothis celebrates one of Liverpool’s most individual and enjoyable nights out and has a look through a new photo gallery.

Garlands, that bastion of excess and all things fabulous, marks its 25th birthday this week with a special celebration, promising to bring the biggest party to Eberle Street on November 24.

The legendary Liverpool nightclub opened its doors in the heady days of 1993, immediately making a name for itself as Liverpool’s premier gay clubbing experience.  The club’s catchphrase (and get out clause) of ‘Garlands made me do it’ surely came in for some heavy use to excuse the hedonistic behavior the club soon became famous for.

Describing itself as ‘a place where the freak, the chic, the unique, the black, the white, the gay and the straight were made welcome’, Garlands was an instant success.  Famous faces, actors, popstars and footballers graced the dancefloor along amongst the Garlands faithful. Ex Liverpool captain Steven Gerard once took to the decks following a bet from Peter Crouch.

Other highlights included the famous Fairies ‘Cross the Mersey boat parties that went on to sail across the Balearics, the iconic club flyers that were displayed in the Tate Gallery.

Garlands stint in Ibiza quickly became the stuff of legends.  Their knack for extreme entertainment, flamboyance and glittery excess fitted perfectly with Ibiza’s own hedonistic vibe and the resulting club nights gathered new fans from across the globe.

A small but perfectly formed treasure trove of photos from Garlands was recently unearthed on an old hard drive, and Getintothis is hugely pleased to be able to show them here.  If a picture paints a thousand words, some of these photos are full on trashy novels.

If you ever got down and dirty on the Garlands’ dance floor, or if you have had even a passing interest in Liverpool’s club culture, you will want to check out our gallery.  Who knows, you may even see yourself, smiling wide and high on life.

As a special treat, the good folk at Garlands have offered two free tickets for their birthday extravaganza.  To win these passes to guaranteed good times, just head on over to our Facebook page, like our Garlands post and share it on your wall.  Winners will be chosen at random, so good luck and get sharing.
