MancMade///Acts Of Hope is the new project raising funds to fight homelessness by collating the great and the good of Manchester music, Getintothis’ Alex Holmes has the details.

Johnny Marr, Peter Hook and Maxine Peake are amongst the star names to feautre on a new record in aid of Manchester’s homeless community.

During the current coronavirus crisis, one story which passed relatively unremarked upon was that of councils being given just 48 hours to house all rough sleepers at the end of March.

While many might question why it took a global pandemic to trigger such a response, this does highlight a significant problem; the estimated 320,000 people homeless in the UK.

One response comes from Ben Guy, singer with Manchester-based band Narcissus. Out this week, MancMade///Acts Of Hope is an 18-track compilation to raise funds for the charity MancSpirit in support of their Creative Change Homeless Project.

Released on Manchester’s 42’s Records, the idea for the album came after Ben made a donation to MancSpirit following an online appeal.

Wanting to do more, Ben came up with the idea of curating a fundraising album of tracks donated by some of the great and the good of the Manchester music scene; hard work and hustling later, Ben’s vision has been realised with support from eighteen of the City’s musical and spoken word artists.

From the legendary to the up-and coming, the album brims with local Mancunian talent, including Johnny Marr, Maxine Peake, Peter Hook, and Gaz Whelan and Rowetta from the Happy Mondays, including beautiful cover art by Paul Evans AKA painted.papillon.smile.

Ben was determined that the finished album should be a cohesive work showcasing a diverse array of Manchester talent, but the primary purpose, of course, is to raise funds.

Damian Carr, co-founder of MancSpirit, said: “Everything we do is aimed at improving mental wellbeing by creating social connections, providing entertainment and offering people the opportunity to join in, make friends and have fun.

“Our ‘Creative Change’ project started with us visiting people struggling with homelessness on the streets, in hostels and day centres, to listen to their needs for creative activity.

We create & facilitate that creative activity to help their mental wellbeing, help them re-engage with the amazing support services out there and, hopefully, help them off the streets and into their own home.

“We value those people and organisations that share our vision of caring for others, helping those that help others, getting stuck in and getting things done.

“When Ben and 42’s Records offered to support our ‘Creative Change’ project it was exactly what we were about.”

MancSpirit///Acts Of Hope” is out on April 24 on 42’s Records – available here.
