Prince’s 1999

Prince’s 1999 album to be reissued plus new vinyl releases and NPG live dates, Getintothis’ Rick Leach with the latest from Paisley Park.

A reissue of Prince’s 1982 commercial breakthrough album 1999 is to be released this year, it was revealed in a statement about the future of Paisley Park.

P Park Management Inc., a division of Graceland Holdings – which also manages the home of Elvis Presley – is handing management of the Paisley Park premises over to his family on October 1, when the current deal comes to an end.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that “a new Paisley Park executive director will be named, and two longtime Prince associates, Trevor Guy and Kirk Johnson, will likely continue in their roles as creative adviser and Paisley Park estate manager, respectively.

They had been working with Prince on the idea of converting the 65,000-square foot studios into a part-time museum.”

Prince’s oldest surviving sibling, Sharon Nelson, confirmed that the new management arrangement was as a result of the contract’s expiration date and not because of any further disagreements.

A spokesperson for the estate said the organization was “committed to continued growth and development of Paisley Park, passionately presenting Prince’s life and work and connecting authentically with his fans – both old and new – each and every day.”

In exciting news for Prince fans, The Minneapolis Star Tribune further reported that, among other projects, a “deluxe 1999” was “due this year.”

The release would come via contracts with Warners and Sony. No details were released to accompany the news although speculation is already rife as to what it may contain, bearing in mind the sheer volume of unreleased material in the famed vaults.

When the 1999 reissue arrives, it will be the second major archival reissue of Prince‘s catalogue and the first one that will have been collated after his death.

In 2017, his estate put out a Deluxe Edition of Purple Rain that contained two CDs of rare and unreleased material and a DVD of a concert from that tour. It was believed that the project had been in the works before his death.

Additionally and more immediately, a trio of mid-’90s Prince projects – including his expansive first post-Warner Bros. album and a release that’s since been hailed as the costliest cassette in history – are set for vinyl re-issue. Emancipation, Chaos and Disorder and The Versace Experience: Prelude 2 Gold will arrive on September 13.

The highly collectible Versace Experience: Prelude 2 Gold was originally issued as a promotional cassette in 1995 during Fashion Week in Paris, and is notable for being the first-ever project credited to Prince‘s new unpronounceable symbol.

Released in July 1996, Chaos and Disorder was an underrated compilation that served as the last original material recorded for Warner Bros. after a contentious few years.

Emancipation

Emancipation followed in November 1996. Featuring exactly three hours of music over a trio of discs, the underrated album celebrated Prince‘s post-label life with a striking variety of music often set to the themes of marriage, romance and family.

FInally, in other news, Prince‘s NPG are set to play four dates in the UK, including one in Manchester this December as part of a worldwide tour.

The NPG reformed following the official Prince tribute concert in October 2016 and includes not only many of those who were in the orginal configuration of the band but others who joined up with Prince along the way.
