The Dears

Ahead of their new album Lover’s Rock, The Dears preview a new song and Getintothis’ Banjo provides the details.

Canadian epic indie rockers The Dears are set to release new album, Lover’s Rock, on May 15.

The album, their eighth, draws influence from The Dears breakthrough album, 2003’s No Cities Left. Mainstay and frontman Murray Lightburn says of the album “There’s a direct line between the sort of doominess of No Cities Left and this album. You could go straight from Lovers Rock to No Cities Left and it’s like they’re interlocked. But it’s a different kind of doom.

Around 2001, it felt like, ‘We have no control. We don’t know what’s going to happen next.’ Now it’s a doom that’s within our grasp. It’s in the air. It’s between us. But we do nothing about it.”

Describing themselves as “part Bacharach, part Krautrock”, The Dears came together in 1995 in Montreal, Canada and have had a considerable number of members since then, with only Lightburn and fellow founder Natalia Yanchak as constants.

With an impressive work ethic, Lightburn was still touring 2019’s solo album Hear Me Out when work began on Lovers Rock.

But, as Yanchak says, “the band is never off. For us, the tank is never empty.”

Lightburn explains further, “The Dears aren’t fucking around, we don’t have time to waste. We’ve got a job to do. And we’re going to do it.
