Black Lips: 200 Million Thousand
Vice
You know the way your mate tries his hardest to convince you to buy that record and you’re like ‘yeah, uh-huh, I will..‘ And all the while you’re like ‘yeah, right, as if..
And then you read a superhot review of said record in Vice and you’re like ‘well, now I’m defo not buying it..
Then you get it anyway, and you’re like, ‘hmm
And then you reluctantly catch 20 minutes of said band in a cramped sweat hut at Glastonbury, and you’re like ‘yup, I was right all along,’ and a warm smug glow fills your belly replacing the ‘wow, my feet are so fucked I can feel the gangrene oozing from my pores, is amputation on the agenda?’ feeling.
Well, that was pretty much my introduction to Black Lips.
But then, three weeks ago one play of 200 Million Thousand swiftly followed by a gig which saw four men quite literally turn the Masque Theatre into a steaming mess of upside down madness, lager-soaked bodies, sloppy onstage kissing and, best of all, people swinging from ‘Calm Zone’ signs (irony at it’s finest) afixed to the ceiling, and I was like, ‘right reappraisal time..
Mark McNulty turned to me and said: ‘Basically they’re the modern day Beatles.’
I’m not sure, but I’m certainly not arguing.
8/10
For fans of: Nothing but rock & roll.
