With a new album due next year and hinting at a new populism, GetintothisPaul Higham reports on a new track from cult riff-masters, Hawk Eyes.

Cult Leeds rockers Hawk Eyes have announced the forthcoming release of Everything is Fine, the long awaited follow-up to 2012’s Ideas.

The new album is set to be released on 9 February 2015 and the band will also embark on a headline tour, stopping off at everyone’s favourite dive-bar-cum-scran stop-off, Maguire’s Pizza Bar, on 12 February 2015. Support comes from thunderous duo God Damn.

As a taster of the new album the band have released for streaming lead single, Die Trying.

Continuing the template established by Ideas, the song is likely to further propel the band away from their hardcore beginnings and towards the alt-rock mainstream. Displaying a typically riff-heavy sound, the vocals are toned down suggesting stadium-filling anthems might be on the cards. Certainly if the new song is anything to go by the new LP appears an attempt to broaden their appeal and achieve wider recognition.

While we cannot read too much into the album from a listen to one song, it is hoped that some of the more interesting features of their earlier recordings will remain. Besides the aural pummelling it provided, Ideas also revealed a penchant for experimenting with time signatures and a math-rock sensibility.

We’ll just have to wait until next February to see how the band have been able to marry their populist aspirations with their earlier sonic assaults.
