The Mersey River Festival

The Mersey River Festival kicks off with a cavalcade of live music On the Waterfront, Getintothis’ Keith Ainsworth joined the legion of merry music lovers.

BBC Music hosted a spectacle of live music on Pier Head last night, opening the weekend’s Mersey River Festival in style with sets from BBC Introducing and LIMF Academy acts.

With the evening sun still blazing above, the packed Waterfront enjoyed performances from hotly tipped Liverpool newcomers Luke Cusato and Katy Alex as well as GIT Award nominee Xam Volo.

Also playing as part of the BBC Introducing Showcase were the delightful alt-folk five piece Cavalry and Liverpool heavyweights Tea Street Band. Fresh from their Sound City performance further up the waterside, Dave McCabe and the Ramifications must be feeling quite at home on the dockside by now, they may abandon indoor stages altogether.

As twilight set in things began to heat up with Craig Charles taking over the stage with his 6 Music Funk and Soul Show coming live from Pier Head. East London’s Andreya Triana regaled the audience with her unique vocal style and soulful performance before giving way to soul stars John Turrell and Lisa Stansfield.

Treating Liverpool to a one off performance from the exclusively formed Fantasy Funk Band, Craig Charles wrapped things up, lighting up dockside and dazzling on the decks.
