October is in full swing and with one of the busiest weeks of the year gig wise, Getintothis’ Simon Kirk has all the details.
If feels like we were here just yesterday. Well, it was only last week, so close enough. Week tend to bleed into one another in this task that is life. We just carry on.
Last week was a belter for gigs. By all accounts, Creep Show and Richard Hawley put on spell-binding shows. Those in attendance at Leaf for Jesca Hoop would agree that the night was equally as great.
The week ahead promises to be just as special. From memory, this writer would strongly suggest that it’s the busiest week for gigs this year, so far.
As you’ll soon find out, nostalgia is very much the main course at the dinner table, but there’s plenty going for younger bands, this week, too.
Pom Poko are a good shout, while Yorkshire outfit, Dead Naked Hippies always put on an impressive performance, too.
Then there’s Ali Horn and Cal Ruddy for all you folk heads out there. Yes, we are negligent of missing someone out here, but you get the point. It’s a week brimming with something for everyone.

Pom Poko
Pom Poko: Jacaranda Phase One, Monday October 14
The week kicks off with Norway-based art punks, Pom Poko, who arrive in our city courtesy of local promoters, Harvest Sun.
Having released their debut album, Birthday, earlier this year, Pom Poko are set to lift the fur of those willing to stick their heads into Jac Phase One on Monday night.
Peter Hook
Peter Hook & The Light: Shankly Hotel, Thursday October 17
Good old Hooky. Books have been written, floorboards of the Hacienda have (probably) been sold. What’s next but for Peter Hook & The Light to play The Hits?
Yup, the former New Order and Joy Division bassist will be playing all your favourites on the night.
Anyone hazard a guess for how many Unknown Pleasures T-shirts will be in the crowd? We’re thinking about 50ish.

Saint Etienne: Everyman, Thursday October 17
While Hooky rocks out on the rooftop of the Shankly Hotel, there’s a bit more nostalgia down the road in the way of Saint Etienne.
The much revered three-piece pop pioneers return, playing seminal album, Tiger Bay, from front to back to celebrate 25 years since its release.
There will be a full live band and string section. Perhaps the gig of the week right here.

We Were Promised Jetpacks: Arts Club, Loft, Friday October 18
Scottish indie rockers, We Were Promised Jetpacks, tour as a part of the tenth anniversary of their landmark release, These Four Walls.
Having finished a successful tour of the US earlier this year, Liverpool is the first stop on this tour and having spoken to many gig heads, there’s a consensus that We Were Promised Jetpacks are one of the most intense live acts in the country.
Roy Ayers
Roy Ayers: 24 Kitchen Street, Saturday October 19
Having played Glastonbury earlier this year, jazz-funk legend, Roy Ayers, is set to return for a show at 24 Kitchen Street.
The MOBO pioneer returns to Liverpool for the second time in as many years, however as most know, Ayers‘ show are as rare a hen’s teeth these days, so feel lucky that he’s back.
Craig Finn
Craig Finn & The Uptown Controllers: Jacaranda Phase One, Saturday October 19
The Hold Steady mainman comes to Merseyside in support of his brilliant new long-player, I Need A New War.
One of the finest storytellers in indie rock today, Craig Finn, has been on a superb run of form in a solo capacity and for this writer, this is hands down a must see at Jacaranda Phase One.
Laura Stevenson provides support on the back of her new album (which is great), entitled, The Big Freeze.
Robyn Hitchcock
Robyn Hitchcock: Capstone Theatre, Saturday October 19
Neo-psychedelic pioneer, Robyn Hitchcock, returns to the city for a special performance at the Capstone Theatre.
Having played the Philharmonic last year, the former Soft Boys founder will be playing an eclectic mix of songs throughout his discography, including material from his latest self-titled solo release, which was released in 2017.
