Juniore to play debut Liverpool date at Shipping Forecast

Juniore

French indie outlet Juniore are on their way to Liverpool, so Getintothis’ Luke Halls looks forward to a night of Parisian debauchery.

Juniore’s dreamy myriad of 60s-laden pop, classic psychedelia tropes and airy Parisian mystery has been picking up steam over the last year, and it makes its long-anticipated Liverpool stop-over on 15 November at Shipping Forecast off the back of 2018 debut UK record Magnifique.

Its touring roster for the past year proves that the buzz is certainly to no avail. The band has been powering through several months of international dates, checking in across the US, Mexico, Australia and, most recently, throughout Europe as support to Miles Kane.

The all-female group (with the exception of the androgynous bass player simply known as The Thing) is fronted by lead singer and guitarist Anna Jean, who, for French literature buffs, is the daughter of Nobel Prize-winning writer J.M.G. Le Clézio. Jean picked up a guitar at 25, and, working with fellow musician and producer Samy Osta (quite possibly The Thing), proceeded to form Juniore as a musical ‘sisterhood’ constituted of talented creative women.

The UK has been on Jean and the band’s horizons, too. Teasingly brief stop-offs over the English Channel have been met with lauded praise, including a plug by Arctic Monkeys very own Alex Turner and Matt Helders as well as a coveted Album of the Day selection by BBC Radio 6.

Magnifique is a wonderland meeting place of surf, psych and garage, yet effectively casts these stylistic nods in a refreshingly modern context. Seductive vocals seem a staple across the board, however the LP’s two highlight tracks, Magnifique and Panique, display two sides of the Juniore coin – the former bouncy and upbeat, the latter a darker, more pressing affair.

The Shipping Forecast plays an ideal host to Juniore‘s brand of yé-yé noir psychedelia (think Françoise Hardy meets The Voyeurs), and as such this rare opportunity to catch the band’s first Liverpool date – in such an intimate backdrop – is certainly not one to be missed.
