The Murder Capital

A group of Manchester artists have put together an album in aid of the NHS and #saveourscene while there’s gig news for Halloween at Phase One, Getintothis’ Lewis Ridley reports.

The Murder Capital have this week released a new EP, Live from BBC Maida Vale.

The three track collection was recorded during the band’s time at the BBC with Annie Mac earlier this year.

Live from BBC Maida Vale includes a cover of FKA Twigs’ track Cellophane, as well as fan favourites Green & Blue and Don’t Cling to Life.

The band had this to say:

“When Annie asked us to do a live session at Maida Vale, covering FKA Twigs was an easy decision. Cellophane especially encapsulates such a poignant landmark of heartbreak, and its innately exposed nature further allowed us to really connect with it.”

“The process itself was exciting for us, as we came to reshape its original mould, and impart our own sound and emotion onto the sentiment of inadequacy that she embodies so selflessly on the track. A truly unique artist who we appreciate greatly.”

The EP represents the first release from The Murder Capital since their acclaimed 2019 album When I Have Fears.

The album was backed up by a UK and Europe tour, including their biggest date yet at London’s Electric Ballroom and a date at Liverpool’s O2 Academy.

The band concluded: “Take it easy out there and look after yourselves.”

Elsewhere this week, Black Country, New Road and Black Midi have collaborated to join the list of artists hoping to save London’s The Windmill from extinction.

A host of names including Kate Tempest, Fontaines D.C., Dan Carey’s Scottbrains, Shame, Jerskin Fendrix, PVA and Goat Girl, have contributed live material recorded at The Windmill as part of the Music Venues Trust’s #SaveOurVenues campaign.

Money donated will be split equally between the venue and the awesome local charity Brixton Soup Kitchen. The 16 track album costs £5.

Yo La Tengo

Our new music comes this week from Lucy Dacus, courtesy of Yo La Tengo, who have released a special anniversary edition of their 1995 album Electr-o-pura.

Songwriter Lucy Dacus, who happened to be born on the day of Electr-o-pura’s release, has written a new essay on the landmark album along with a video of the songwriter covering her favourite track Tom Courtenay.
