Taylor Fowlis is back – with a different name, different sound but the same beautiful finish, Getintothis’ Peter Guy is eager to hear more from the new Tayá treasure trove.

Music development‘ – two words which regularly wreak from the industry-speak sick bucket.

Two words which take all the sparkle and stardust away from an industry which is entirely reliant upon it. Two words which can’t help but feel mischievous, slightly corrupt and almost perverse.

Yet, you’d have to be a fool to think most pop artists magically appear fully formed at the lip of the stage from some celestial plain which casually secretes Mileys on Mondays, Adeles on Tuesdays, Rihannas on Wednesdays, takes a break on Thursdays, Kylies on Fridays and Beyoncés over the weekend.

Nope, it doesn’t work like that. The truth is from the moment the ‘biz’ was injected into showbusiness, stars with talent have been sculpted behind the scenes so that they find their voice accordingly, or at least find the pad with which to launch. Sadly, that’s why X Factor and the like are such terrible formats, because having found a dinner-lady with talent there’s zero time to nurture or develop said dinner-lady into something other than a dinner-lady with talent. The result, more often than not, is merely a talented dinner-lady with little else to serve up.

Anyway, we’re not here to talk about dinnerladies. We’re here to talk about Taylor Fowlis. Liverpool’s forgotten girl. You remember her; the prodigious teenager with the rich, velvety voice.

Having proved her considerable talent at Sound City and FestEvol in 2013, she went on to net support slots for Michael Kiwanuka and Bipolar Sunshine. All of which prompted us to name her in Getintothis‘ Ones To Watch in 2014 and select her to play our stage at Liverpool International Music Festival last August.

A cameo single later though, and things have been pretty quiet. In fact, it’s been silent. That is until now. Holed up in various recording studios across both sides of the Atlantic, a new artist has been shaped; step forward Tayá. A darker, bolder and slightly grimier presence is at work judging by her debut single.

Coupled with producer Toddla T, sessions with British producers Snakehips and Starsmith and T-Minus (the fella behind Kendrick Lemar’s Swimming Pools, Tayá‘s debut offering Got Me Wondering delivers a sultry late-night groove, multi-tracked distorted vocals and clipped beats reminiscent of Pusha T. It’s really rather good – and has already found a playlist slot on Radio 1.

Next up, according to her Facebook, is the album. It’s all in development.
