Hull/Leeds-based five-piece bdrmm are set to release their debut album, Getintothis’ Matthew Eland reports.

Vowel-phobic, trans-Pennine, post-punk shoegazers bdrmm are to release their debut album via Sonic Cathedral on July 3, 2020.

Entitled Bedroom, the record was recorded in Leeds late last year by Alex Greaves, who’s also worked with artists such as Kele Okereke, Pulled Apart By Horses, and Bo Ningen.

The album follows their single Happy, which was released last month, and includes their new track Is That What You Wanted To Hear?

The album splices the echoey optimism of W.H. Lung with the hazy dynamics of My Bloody Valentine, throwing in nods to The Stone Roses, Ride, The Cure, Beach House and Protomartyr along the way.

Bedroom represents the latest step in the evolution of the group, which started when frontman Ryan Smith uploaded some GarageBand demos to the BBC Introducing Uploader, only to find them getting played back on Radio 1.

Consolidation of the line-up and a slew of singles followed. It’s no surprise to hear, with the band being such a formative experience for its young members, that the album should turn out to be something of a bildungsroman concept album.

The subject matter spans mental health, alcohol abuse, unplanned pregnancy, drugs… basically every cliché topic that you could think of,” explains Smith. “But that doesn’t mean they ever stop being relevant. It’s a fucker growing up, but I’m lucky enough to have been able to project my feelings in the form of this band, surrounded by four of the best people I’ve ever met.

It also handily gives them an opportunity to set the record straight about the pronunciation of their name.

I never thought I’d get to the stage where I would have to explain it so much,Ryan continues. “We have been pronounced as Boredom, Bdum and my old boss actually thought we were a ska band called Bad Riddim. We’re all sarcastic cunts, so Bedroom spelt correctly seemed like the perfect title.

The full tracklisting of Bedroom is:
1. ‘Momo’
2. ‘Push/Pull’
3. ‘A Reason To Celebrate’
4. ‘Gush’
5. ‘Happy’
6. ‘(The Silence)’
7. ‘(Un)happy’
8. ‘If….’
9. ‘Is That What You Wanted To Hear?’
10. ‘Forget The Credits’
