Liverpool music gig guide – Spring King, Quantic, Sneaky Nixons and more

With the rising thermostat seemingly making tempers flair all round, Getintothis Craig MacDonald finds peace in the music of this weeks gig guide. 

You would think that with the likes of Sound City on the horizon, everyone would be in the mood to catch up with mates, having a drink and a dance in the sunshine till the wee hours, while our favourite songs play out over the gathering crowds.

Well this writer is anyway, but for some reason, with the summer heat continuing to rise, some people have morphed in to wasps with tempers flaring all around the musical community.

Whether it be Blossoms and Sleaford Mods squaring up or Azealia Banks and Gene Simmons sprouting shite from their musical cesspits, there definitely seems to be some seriously angry folk out their at the moment.

Well, to quote the great Jack Nicholson, from his classic film Mars Attacks (oh you know it is!), “Cant we all just, get along?”. I mean, we all have one thing in common, our love for music.

So why not bury the hachet, have a bevy, go see some quality music together from the list below and shake it off.

Hot 8 Brass Band: The Magnet, May 16

New Orleans legends Hot 8 Brass Band return to Liverpool this Monday, when they hit up The Magnet in what is bound to be a sold out night for the Grammy Award nominees.

With support coming from the incredible Galactic Funk Militia and The Blowback Horns, this is most defiantly where the funk is at this week.

Spring King: Arts Club, May 18

Fresh from releasing their latest single The Summer, Mancunian post punk quartet Spring King descend upon the Arts Club this Wednesday in support of their forthcoming debut album, Tell Me If You Like To.

Joining the upstarts on Seel street, will be the dark surfy clatter of Get Inuit plus, fresh from tearing up FestEvol, the filthy sounds of Strange Collective will also be making an appearance on a solid lineup of talent.

Quantic: Constellations, May 18

After his fantastic display in The Kazimier last year, Quantic returns to Liverpool this week, when the multi instrumentalist plays Constellations on Wednesday night.

This time featuring his full band, the DJ come producer will be demonstrating why he is at the forefront of cutting edge tropical beats. One not to miss.

Hayseed Dixie: O2 Academy, May 18

Now fourteen albums in to their career, the pioneers of the rockgrass scene Hayseed Dixie return to the O2 Academy this Wednesday having blasted the roof off the venue last year.

With each album compromising a different theme from AC/DC to Black Sabbath, the group are bound to be a midweek highlight for those who go to this hoedown.

Emma Pollock: Arts Club, May 19

A founding member of Scottish icons The Delgardos, the emotive singer songwriter Emma Pollock brings her third solo album In Search Of Harperfield to the Arts Club this Thursday as part of her UK tour.

In a treble header of singer songwriters, Scottish singer RM Hubbert will be joining proceedings having released his latest LP Telling The Trees, while the charms of local lad Cal Ruddy will also be on display.

Delamere: Studio 2, May 19

Not to be confused with the forest of the same name, indie electronica quartet Delamere will be heading to Parr street venue Studio 2 this Thursday having released their latest single Kill It last month.

Hailing from Stoke, the group are the latest on the bustling line of talent to come from the West Midlands and will be in fine form having blasted Live in Leeds recently.

The Probes: Buyers Club, May 19

The second installment of High Soul’s monthly excursion into all things out there, features a trio of acts that are all set to make for a scintillating at the Buyers Club this Thursday.

From the psych magnificence of The Probes, to the all out bone crunching clatter of Ohmns, to the jangling electronic delights of Lo Five, there is plenty to tickle your fancy at this one.

Omphalos- ‘Energy Eternal’: The Invisible Wind Factory, May 19

When one door closes, another one opens. Such is the case for the team behind the legendary Kazimier venue who this week bring the next chapter in their story as they bring Omphalos- ‘Energy Eternal’ to their new dockland home of The Invisible Wind Factory.

Beginning a run of immersive shows in the mysterious docklands venue, Omphalos promises to make sure that this new venue starts with a bang. A truly not to be missed event.

Dizraeli: Buyers Club, May 20

In what is swiftly becoming a busy week for the Buyers Club, Bristol rapper come poet come singer Dizraeli heads up to the Hardman Street venue as he plays in support of his latest EP Eat My Camera.

Having gone back to being a solo artists once more, the multi instrumentalist hip hop head has described his latest work as his most honest offering yet. This will be the first time he has played Liverpool since his packed gig in The Blade Factory a couple of years and with Wild Rossa & The ’88 and Eno G also on offer, this should be a top night.

Meltybrains? :24 Kitchen Street, May 20

Dublin quintet Meltybrains? are a group that befit their name more than most and are bound to be a real treat for those that take a wander over to 24 Kitchen Street to see them this Friday.

Hard to pin down, the group are often touted as being an experimental rock sensation. With unpredictable and equally inventive live shows, this group of avant-garde mentalists will leave you wanting more.

FU SS, L U M E N, danye & Indigo Moon: Black Lodge, May 20

The heavy sounds of psych will be at full pelt with a stellar lineup at Black Lodge this Friday featuring groovy pop merchants danye, jangly dream pop from L U M E N, the dreamy sounds of FUSS and not forgetting the psych rock of Indigo Moon, this has quality written all over it.

The Sneaky Nixons: Buyers Club, May 21

One of the most provocative bands to have come from our city in recent times, The Sneaky Nixons return with their new single Schadenfreude and with a gig in the ever increasingly busy Buyers Club this Saturday.

With a late date shift, this bash now finds support coming from garage rockers The Havocs and the tantalising Go Fiasco, so one to get down early for if you can.

The Pink Punk Party: Maguires, May 21

Following the raucous scenes of their first bash, Bitchicism return with the second installment of their Pink Punk Party’s, with the glitter set to flow at Maguires this Saturday.

With a lineup containing Chester pea punk trio Peaness, rockers Franceens, sass punk from Queen Zee and The Sasstones, dark post punkers SeaWtiches and fuzz lovers Mystified, this is going to be special.

Banners: Studio 2, May 21

Having released his eponymous debut EP earlier in the year to a swell of plaudits, Michael Nelson aka Banners makes a homecoming stop on his UK tour, when he plays Studio 2 on Saturday.

Filled with haunting yet hopeful melodies, this has all the ingredients to be a real treat for those who manage to witness it.

Jerry Dammers: District, May 21

As part of the month long Afrofuturisim celebrations of Writing On The Wall festival, Saturday finds a special set from The Specials’ Jerry Dammers as he rolls into District.

Helping to close the days proceedings from the AfroFutures Party, Dammers will serving up a good dose of beats to make sure this party is going to be a good one.

This Is England: Buyers Club, June 11

In celebration of the iconic series and film from Shane Meadows, next month the Buyers Club plays host to a special set from two of its pivotal characters, Thomas Turgoose and Andrew Shim, otherwise known as Shaun and Milky.

With mus if on the night also coming from the troubadour Rory Wynnne and psych rock splendour of The Mysterines, this is bound to be a good one.

 The Art Of Reggae Exhibition: Constellations, June 1-15

Taking place over fifteen days at Constellations, The Art Of Reggae Exhibition will showcase 100 reggae inspired posters, designed by artists and illustrators around the world.

Brought together by Positive Vibration – Festival Of Reggae and the International Reggae Poster Contest, the event will set the tone for the festival, also taking place in June. With the launch party also brining a special release of One Love Pal Ale by the heads of Black Lodge, in a touching tribute to the late, great DJ Derek, this is a must for all lovers of good vibes.
